Obassno children’s workshops

This is an archived event from the 2009 Programme.

Anna Durance oboe, Emma Selby bassoon, Holly Cullen-Davies piano

Obassno follow up last year’s highly successful Festival appearance with two more open workshops for children.

"Under the big blue sea lives a naughty pink octopus who takes delight in teasing the sad lonely old whale. Fortunately the friendly dolphin is around to put a stop to this teasing!" Pianist Holly’s writing a special piece for the workshop around this story.

The workshop is a fascinating combination of performance, story-telling, workshop and participation – children not only experience a performance, but also get actively involved in music-making through movement, singing, creating, dancing, listening etc.

It’s aimed mainly at the 4-7 year age-range. Children must be accompanied by an adult (admitted free!) There will be two performances (10.00 and 12.00), so we can limit the size of group. That’s important – they take part, they don’t just listen. But they won’t need special musical skills – anyone can come and enjoy it. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Anna and Holly are talented postgraduate students whose shared interest in chamber music and education led them to form Obassno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2007. They have teaching experience: in instrumental tuition; through leading and assisting in workshops; and in class teaching. The group (featured in the Wigmore Chamber Tots series) are now joined by a new bassoonist, Emma Selby.

"A talented group of musicians who held the children’s attention throughout the whole of the session. Along with their friendly manner and musicianship skills it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the planning of the workshop beforehand, making the event a great success!" (Wigmore Hall)
