Janet Davey children’s workshops

This is an archived event from the 2009 Programme.

Janet Davey workshop leader/piano  Richard Benjafield percussion Children from all three schools vocals and instruments

These three concerts provide a showcase for music and other creative work developed with and by children from Little Missenden, Hyde Heath and Prestwood Infants Schools, in workshops led by composer Janet Davey and percussionist Richard Benjafield.

Last year artist Lydia Corbett (Picasso’s famous ‘Girl with a ponytail’) came and inspired the children. This year Janet will be taking one of Lydia’s own pictures, the Angel of Peace as a starting point for a new composition and a stimulus to unlock the children’s creative ability. They will be involved in music-making, dance and movement, visual artwork and poetry, all inspired by the project, and embracing play-time songs and rhythms from childhood. Richard Benjafield’s Ukelele and Samba bands from the Guildhall will take part.

The workshops will feed into the wider curriculum, and engage staff. It is rewarding to see the benefit of these Festival projects to children, families and teaching staff in our community. Each year the children have enjoyed, and developed confidence in, their own music-making and creativity.

Janet Davey has worked for seven years with local schoolchildren on the Festival’s behalf. As an award-winning radio programme-maker and broadcaster she specialised in creating ‘sound worlds’ within programmes, and developing science broadcasts about ‘The Brain and Music’. She is now a mother, carer, and composer, and her piano pieces directly reflect her own life experience. Richard Benjafield, co-founder of Ensemble Bash, is an extraordinary percussionist, whose ‘percussive magic’ is already familiar to the children from earlier workshops.
