Ruth Padel

This is an archived event from the 2009 Programme.

Ruth Padel is a fine poet and an excellent presenter of her work. She will read from and discuss her much-lauded collection A Life in Poems, a ‘lyric biography’ written in tribute to her great-great-grandfather Charles Darwin. She will draw out themes from Darwin’s life and work, and talk about his influence on her writing.

"Her remarkable sequence of exquisite, precise and moving poems covers Darwin’s science, travels, marriage and family life. Once I started reading I could not put it down till I reached the end; then I turned back for the pleasure of reading again" (Claire Tomalin)

"Padel has caught the quintessence of the man’s character as if in a butterfly net. One of the finest poems summarizes his wonder at entering for the first time into pristine rainforest" (Economist)

Ruth Padel is a prize-winning British poet who also writes acclaimed non-fiction. She is a Fellow both of the Royal Society of Literature and the Zoological Society of London, a Member both of the Royal Geographical Society and Bombay Natural History Society. She has won the UK National Poetry Competition; individual poems from her seven collections have been widely anthologized, broadcast, and shortlisted for all major British prizes.

"I love Ruth Padel’s poetry. She is sexy, strong, rhythmic, passionate, fully alive and a whiz with words" (Jeanette Winterson, The Times)

"Approachable, contemporary, cool poems, magnificently varied, daring and imaginative, never short of glittering humour, and fabulously rich" (What’s On)
