Devotional music addressed to the Virgin Mary is among the earliest in the Western canon and composers still write to her today. This programme spans the millennium from Hildegard to Sarah Rimkus, while John Tavener represents the very strong Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Most Marian texts play their full part in the liturgy but are also very personal. Composers can appeal as one human being to another – but another who is at the same time the Mother of God. She may be just a maiden but she’s also unique, ‘makeles’, without stain.

Siglo de Oro is one of the leading vocal ensembles of its generation, praised for its golden tone, seamless blend, and innovative programming. The group made its professional debut in 2014 at the Spitalfields Festival, of which the Financial Times said “Siglo de Oro, under the assured direction of Patrick Allies, performed with vivacity and poise”. The group’s world premiere recording of a mass by Hieronymus Praetorius was BBC Music Magazine’s Choral and Song Album of the Month in 2018 and was placed on the longlist for the 2019 BBC Music Magazine Awards.

“Here is a choir in which all the elements are held in perfect equilibrium. Patrick Allies…ferments vigour, urgency and narrative sweep” BBC Music Magazine
