Rachel Podger violin, Gary Cooper fortepiano

With their inimitable feeling for the music the magical partnership of Rachel Podger and Gary Cooper will play solo and duo works for violin and fortepiano by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. They’ve just finished their award-winning eight-volume CD survey of the Mozart violin sonatas, and started work on a Beethoven cycle.

They’ll begin with a Mozartian gem, the Eb Sonata – a late work with subtle modulations featuring a gentle, heartfelt and breathtakingly beautiful central adagio.

The young Beethoven was heavily influenced by Mozart, and this delightful set of 12 variations on Figaro’s aria Se vuol ballare from the Marriage of Figaro was his first work for violin and piano. Beethoven’s Eb violin sonata has an explosively muscular opening allegro, a serene but yearningly expressive adagio and a spritely concluding rondo.

Finally two works by Haydn – still the most underrated of the great classical composers. They’ll play his C major violin concerto for violin and piano – with Gary reducing the orchestral parts for pianoforte. This work has plenty of Haydn’s wit and elegance, a lyrically singing adagio – and some Italianate virtuosity in the up-tempo outer movements. Haydn’s last piano sonata is a major masterpiece of simple perfection – a sublimely poignant adagio flanked by two faster movements.

Gary Cooper is a regular Festival favourite, a peerless performer and communicator. Rachel Podger is one of our finest violinists. Their eight-CD edition of Mozart’s complete sonatas for keyboard and violin has been "showered with critical acclaim and awards" (Sunday Times). They’ll play the instruments used in their recording – a 1739 Pesarinius violin, and Derek Adlam’s copy of a 1795 fortepiano by Anton Walter.

"No other team can match Cooper and Podger for their brio, stylishness and sense of discovery in this marvellous music" (Hugh Canning, Sunday Times)

"Podger’s violin inflections remain delightfully lively and keenly felt, and Cooper’s fortepiano has dancing feet" (The Times)

"Gary Cooper and Rachel Podger’s period-instrument survey of Mozart’s Sonatas for Keyboard and Violin is rapidly turning into one of the finest Mozart series on the market... The lovely tone of Cooper’s fortepiano, Podger’s elegant yet playful style and the lively interplay between the two musicians make this a winning disc in all senses!" (Anne McAlister)
