Tarren Duo will play a mixture of traditional and self-penned material, all rooted in the English Folk tradition. Over the past two years, Tarren (usually a trio) have forged a reputation for incorporating modular hooks and minimalist forms into their music, creating new works and reimagining the Folk tradition.
Old made New
Traditional songs such as Rigs of the Time and Searching for Lambs have been given a new lease of life and have been brought up to date continuing the culture of ownership and reinvention that keeps the material relevant.
Traditional tunes like Orange in Bloom and Old Tom of Oxford, both Cotswold morris tunes, are given the same treatment by Tarren to keep them fresh.
New from Old
Self-composed tunes form the backbone of Tarren's repertoire. Pieces found on their debut album Revel like Hardwood, Salt & Sweet, The Stray Polska draw largely on English & European folk tune traditions, while utilising minimalist forms and contemporary sensibilities to create exciting new arrangements.
Tarren are contributing to the tradition with new songs such as You to Me and Sunk; pieces where the influence of contemporary music is recognisable.
Tarren are ambassadors for new-folk; music that is fresh and dynamic, rooted in the English tradition. Original and traditional material is expertly arranged by these musicians who are creating music that moves and excites people. By incorporating modular hooks and minimalist forms, Tarren is leading folk music to a new place, while keeping the pulse of traditional dance at its heart. While Tarren is usually a trio, appearing tonight at late notice, Sid Goldsmith and Danny Pedler will play a rare, intimate duo set - ideal for the setting of Little Missenden Church.
Tarren’s debut album Revel was released in 2022 to high acclaim and was compared with the work of Faustus and Lau’s legendary debut album Lightweights and Gentlemen. They toured this material nationally in April 2023.
