Arnold Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht

Franz Schubert String Quintet in C major D956

Programme Notes (also available free at concert)

Nowadays perhaps better known in its orchestral version, Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was originally composed for string sextet. Written in 1899, it was the composer’s first significant work and is probably still his most popular. It’s a wonderful example of a late-flowering Romanticism, based firmly on Brahms and Wagner – taking structure from the former and lush chromaticism from the latter. The end of a musical era in one sense but just the beginning of the composer’s own journey into a world of atonality and serialism.

Written only a few months before his death in 1828, Schubert’s C major Quintet remained unpublished for 25 years. With a second cello rather than the more usual extra viola, the work has a special richness of tone and is typical late-Schubert in its combination of the most sublime beauty and lyricism together with contrasting moments of dark and unsettling uncertainty. Schubert wrote a number of great chamber works but the C major Quintet can lay fair claim to being his greatest.

The Rossetti Ensemble was created in 2018 from long-standing collaborations between pianist John Lenehan, violinist Sara Trickey, violist Sarah-Jane Bradley and cellist Tim Lowe.

Named after Dante Gabriel, the eminent British poet and Pre-Raphaelite artist, the group is passionate about the repertoire of the era and the composers who derived inspiration from his work during the late Romantic period and early 20th Century. In addition to piano quartets the group is flexible, working with other high profile instrumentalists, producing imaginative, varied programmes.

Without the need for a piano in this programme, the Ensemble’s other core players are joined by regular collaborators in the form of an additional violin, viola and cello.
