Frans Hals

Time, Money, Life

(Sat 14 Oct 2023 4.00pm  Little Missenden Village Hall)

This lecture will explore the outstandingly inventive portrait practice of Dutch painter Frans Hals. Characterised by quick, bravura brushstrokes, his portraits of nobles, merchants, actors, friends and family members created a sensation in the 17th-century art market. His works have maintained an enduring appeal, inspiring countless artists from Judith Leyster to Manet, Van Gogh to Celia Paul.

In order to breathe life into his subject, Hals incorporated vanguard modes of representation into his practice, modes which can reveal his and his society’s understanding of a changing sense of time and of human life itself. The lecture will build on the forthcoming major National Gallery exhibition as well as new research on Frans Hals, exploring further his art in a wider historical context.
