(Sat 7 Oct 2023 2.30pm Little Missenden Village Hall)
This afternoon the Festival is celebrating the musical life of our patron, David Matthews. We’ll hear examples of David’s compositional skill at tonight’s concert. As a prelude, we have a film and a discussion, both focused on David’s lifetime contribution to British music.

Barrie Gavin has had a long and distinguished career in film and is best known for his documentaries on classical music – individual composers in particular. He started work as an assistant film editor at the BBC in 1961 and, from 1964, was closely associated with BBC2 where he began directing music programmes, many of them for Omnibus.
Over the years he’s collaborated extensively with major figures in the musical world including Pierre Boulez, Sir Simon Rattle and Gerard McBurney. His major achievement, however, is the series of film ‘portraits’ of living composers, which he started some 50 years ago and to which this afternoon’s recently-made film on David Matthews is the latest addition.
In 2017 he was awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society, a unique honour for a film- maker, which described the ‘portrait’ series as “an unprecedented legacy and treasure trove for musicians and curious listeners alike to discover”.
