During 2020/2021 – a time of unprecedented isolation and atomization – guitarist Ant Law and saxophonist Alex Hitchcock set up a new collaboration series with artists around the globe as a call for solidarity and connection translated into music. They titled the series Same Moon in the Same World - the name taken from a line in Haruki Murakami’s 1999 novel Sputnik Sweetheart: “we’re both looking at the same moon in the same world. We’re connected to reality by the same line.”

As Mike Gates from ukvibe put it when the album of the same name came out late last year, “that quote became a neat summation of the lockdown experience shared by musicians across the world, and this connection to others in a similar predicament became a theme running through the music Hitchcock and Law were writing. This may well be one of the key reasons why the album is so melodically driven, but I’m sure it’s not just that. There seems to be a real connection between the musicians… as if the music itself is defying the hurdle of distance… resulting in a surprisingly fluid recording that shares and demonstrates how humans can not only overcome challenges but actually benefit from them. 

Same Moon in the Same World is something of a triumph. Beautiful and exciting atmospheric tunes are performed with skill and character from all involved. I for one can’t wait to hear the next collaborative instalment from Law and Hitchcock...”
