The passions and rhythms of flamenco

This is an archived event from the 2011 programme.

Rafael flamenco guitar  Lola Rueda flamenco singer and dancer  Demi Garcia  flamenco percussion  Kuljit Bhamra tabla

There’s something about flamenco – not just infectious rhythms, fingers flying across guitar frets or the swirling skirts and drumming heels of the dancers, but in the way it speaks to us so deeply and directly, powerful emotions freely expressed within tight disciplines.

Rafael’s troupe combines the intimacy and soulfulness of Gypsy song and the passion of dance.  In this new collaboration with the amazing tabla player Kuljit Bhamra he re-unites flamenco with the music Gypsies originally brought from Rajasthan in Northern India to Andalusia. Rafael and Kuljit are fantastic performers, joined by Rafael's regular dancer/singer Lola and cajon player Demi Garcia.

Rafael is one of the finest guitarists of his generation. He has created a unique sound, combining gypsy soul and energy with the earthiness of Andalusian chant. He balances innovation and tradition, staying true to the music’s ancient Spanish Gypsy roots. Critics have said thats he “is fiery and passionate” (Telegraph), “plays with the soul of a gypsy” (El País), and “exudes rhythmic vitality and intense emotions” (La Gazetta). His website can be found here.

Kuljit Bhamra is an inspiring and influential musician, a tabla player of stunning virtuosity and musicality with a passion for enabling musicians from different cultures to work together. He has an MBE and an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Exeter University. His website can be accessed by clicking here. The Wikipedia article on him can be accessed here.

Andalusian Lola has been dancing and singing since she was six, an electrifying performer whose energy and commitment make her both provocative and irresistible.  Demi Garcia is a percussionist and drum teacher.
